Quash found it harder to wake up this time, feeling more groggy than usual. He practically rolled out of bed this time, barely feeling like he even wanted to stand. He sat up on the floor and leaned back against the bed. He let out a loud yawn and began to rub his eyes. That was a particularly deep sleep, how long was he out? He focused on his Ki sense once again, sensing no one around again. It looked like Jorey was out again. He always thought it’d be better if they trained together, but it is what it is.
He stood up with a grunt, feeling his muscles aching as he did so. He looked at this Three Section Staff that was leaning against the wall just outside his closet. He decided to leave it behind, wanting to focus on something else. He told himself a while ago that he had to get around to perfecting his Afterimage technique, but he kept procrastinating. Not only that, he also had to perfect his Bok Choy Blast. He had to get better at redirecting the blast to a moving target without losing so much power in the process.
Quash had to remind himself to take baby steps as he walked into the bathroom. Upon entering, he looked out of the window that sat next to the shower. It was pitch black out! The captain had accidentally slept through the entire day! Quash didn’t know how to react, standing with his eyes wide and mouth agape. He had to get to training now! He couldn’t afford to miss even a single day of training! Not with an opponent as powerful as Liari, who was he was sure was more than excited to have another go at him.
Quash went to the sink to rub water on his face to wake himself up. He refused to lose anymore time. Today, he’d make it a point to perfect the Afterimage technique and leave the Bok Choy Blast for another day. Once he was done, he felt much more awake and ready to tackle this training session. He turned the faucet off and left the bathroom and headed down the hall. He made his way to the Gravitron, where the Training Dummy would be inside, waiting for another round with him.
As Quash entered the room, he was still trying to wrap his head around the fact that he had slept that long. He figured he couldn’t be too surprised, he had been training a lot after all. Every day he had been pushing his mental and physical strength to its limits. He had gotten a lot stronger since he started training this way, his body was extremely exhausted after every session. It looked like it had finally been building up until it just decided that it needed a giant long recovery nap to be able to get back into shape. On the bright side, his body had mostly recovered completely from his fight with the majin. His bruises were gone, his scars had faded, and his cuts were completely healed.
That being said, his bruises from his fight with this dummy were still present. Looking over at the robot as he turned on the Gravitron and turned the dial to 50x Gravity, he could still see the dents he made with his weapon from his previous day of training. He hoped he wouldn’t break it again, but he was sure it would hold up. After all, today he was going to do all defense work only. He wasn’t planning on throwing a single punch this time. He just needed to be faster. The lights in the room turned dark red as the Gravity was activated and Quash walked over the training dummy and turned it on. He jumped back and got into his fighting stance.
Before he started, Quash began to think more about the technique he was trying to master. What did mastering it even mean to him? The afterimage worked by moving so fast you left an image of yourself behind. Right now, he could create only one image. Obviously, he wanted to create more, but how many? After a while, it’d just start getting redundant. He thought to himself for a moment, wanting to set a goal for himself. Two? No, too little. At that point he might as well not do it at all. Higher power enemies would easily be able to see through something like that. Maybe three? Not bad. A good start maybe, but he figured he could do better than that. He needed to be able to really confuse his opponent. Something that would truly throw them for a loop.
Four? No, wait. Five. Yes, that was the best option. Anything more than that he’d feel like he’d be beating a dead horse. Besides, he didn’t want to waste any time trying to work on a technique that was already fine as it was. He had other stuff to do and more techniques to master. Five was enough where he’d be able to make the enemy guess where he was. He would be able to not just dodge the attack, but be able to easily counterattack after. He could probably think of even more complex uses to become versatile in his fighting style.
Quash gave the command as he usually did, allowing the Training Dummy to start training him. He realized he had to allow it to adapt to the point where he would actually have to use the Afterimage in order to dodge its attacks. He figured he’d just have to keep dodging and eventually it would figure itself out. As the robot launched its first few attacks, Quash effortlessly dodging them. He noticed that, even at this level, he was moving around much better than he was at the beginning of this entire training arc that he was on. It was nice to recognize the progress he was making, even if he had to still climb much hire to reach where he wanted to be at.
After about a solid ten minutes of dodging, he began to see the fight escalate. The dummy was much faster now, even occasionally taking off strands of hair as Quash narrowly its attacks. The way it was acting, well, you could compare it to a wild animal. It was as if it was imitating a blood-lusted predator who just wanted to sink it’s teeth into it’s prey. Quash couldn’t help but feel it reminded him of someone he knew. Who knew who that could possibly be? In any case, it wouldn’t be long before he’d have to use the afterimage technique. He just needed to wait a little longer so it could get a little faster and…
The robot’s next attack went straight through Quash, or at least it appeared to do so. In reality, it went through a completely false image of him. The captain had to resort to using it back to back. The attacks started to increase in speed at an alarming rate at this point, and Quash had been trying to go faster and faster. He was going hit his limit soon, and then the dummy would be all over him like white on rice. He had to hurry up!
Quash got cracked across the face in midair and then got sent into the ground. He crossed his arms over his head as the robot was now right on top of him throwing one punch after another at rapid speeds. If he was going to get better he was going to have to do it now. He decided to keep trying even if he failed. Maybe the dummy’s punches could serve as discipline for making the wrong move? It’d be a painful experience for sure, but you know what they say: nothing ventured, nothing gained!
Quash spent the next half hour getting his ass beat by a robot. On the bright side, he was slowly but surely getting better. Eventually, his one copy after image began to get more and more effective. Soon he was able to start dodging some of the robot’s blows again. This was a good sign, but it wouldn’t be long before it wouldn’t work anymore. It was learning faster than he was, so it was more of “two steps forward, three steps back.”
Quash had now increased his afterimage ability by a significant amount. He was able to create three images now, and temporarily was able to gain the upper hand on the training dummy. Due to his newfound versatility, it was taking the training dummy longer to adapt. He was feigning attacks from multiple different directions and whenever a surprise attack from a certain direction stopped working, he’d change it up on the fly. He was able to temporarily confuse even a machine, but that didn’t last long either. There were only so many patterns that someone could do before their tricks started getting old, and that’s what started to happen to Quash.
He needed to be faster, more unpredictable. More images, more options. Over the next thirty minutes, Quash began to slowly work his way up as he practically raced the machine at this point. More bruises began to accumulate all over his body as he took blow after blow as he moved around the room with the robot right on top of him. As he began to use the afterimage one more time, this time he managed to bust out one more clone than last time, now having four of them. The images all had different martial arts stances.
The Training Dummy paused for a moment, trying to calculate the best course of action. The moment created an opportunity for Quash, which quickly took advantage of. He attacked from its right side, slamming his knee into its side. He fired off a flurry of punches after that, taking advantage of the edge he had to give himself the smallest of breaks before grabbing its arm and throwing it to the other side of the room. His aura flared up as he prepared for another go. He knew the robot would be right back on its feet to continue its assault, and it was. This time, it was so fast that it was creating afterimages of its own!
Quash gritted his teeth as he tried his hardest to defend himself. Blood and spit went flying from his mouth as he was almost helpless. He could hardly keep up this time but refused to go down. As he continued to push his limits, cutting down on the amount of wasted movement he had. His entire body took on a dull ache as he was using every muscle in his body to its maximum capacity. After a while, he managed to surpass his limits, creating five images this time. The Training Dummy was slowing down to adjust to even more variables, but it was too late. Quash gained the upper hand for the final time, landing a barrage of punches and kicks before finally halting the session.
As the Training Dummy froze in place before Quash walked over to turn the Artificial Gravity. He had finally accomplished his task his mastering the Afterimage technique. He knew that the Bok Choy Blast was next on his list, but for now, he’d get some much needed rest. Who knows, maybe he’d get to train with Jorey next time. It was probably better than training with a Dummy anyways. Especially since he’d actually be able to get feedback and tips on how to get better. He wouldn’t mind helping Jorey out with any techniques he might have wanted to learn either.
Quash made his way down the hall and plopped himself right on top of his bed again. However, he got up almost as soon as he laid down! Holy moly these sheets stunk! I guess taking a bunch of naps while drenched in blood, sweat, and maybe tears weren’t really doing a whole lot of wonders for the smell. He had to clean these bad boys asap!
